The Secret Society of Property Managers Who Take Month-Long Vacations

The most exclusive membership in property management is CRANE™.

Why?

Because it's members are asked to shift their priorities.

No, there's no secret handshake or midnight initiation ceremony.

But there is a very clear ask of it's members that is radically juxtaposed against what 99% of the industry is focused on.

-----

Before I dive further into the rise of Crane and why it's upending norms in our space I want to park on the central premise of Crane - time freedom.

Most business owners never achieve time freedom.

This is obvious.

What's less obvious is how few even try.

The "grind" is how we all got off the ground. It's what set us apart.

But now, it's what holds us back.

It's the way we justify being busy, rushed, burnt out and distracted.

The grind justifies all.

Because “someday” it will have been worth it.

But damn if someday isn't always tomorrow.

Here are three recent experiences that impacted me:

1) A family member I love dearly is working like a dog while their health declines. Doctors visits and surgeries are becoming more common, and yes they could retire anytime - but that would be "leaving money on the table". A cardinal sin.

2) One of the most successful PM's I know is holding out on exiting as he approaches 80. He's got a great plan to maximize exit value that I am confident is going to work - it just needs a couple more years to achieve peak value.

3) An industry leader I look up to told me he committed himself to not trading time with his family for chasing money - but in retrospect he still fell into that trap and deeply regretted it.

That last one haunts me. I have a young family and feel the tension.

All of these stories have one thing in common - leveraging time to maximize business.

But what about leveraging business to maximize time?

If time freedom isn't the point - what is?

In the end - how much is your time worth?

If you're salary + profits total $200k and you work 50 hours a week, the answer is that an hour of your life is worth $80.

The number doesn't really matter - the point is that time is the only thing you can't get back and there's no amount of money that is worth trading your life for.

Don't make the trade.

Find a way out of the matrix.

Realize that being busy isn't making you more successful.

-----

Back to Crane and what they ask of members.

It's the only organization focused on helping members achieve time freedom.

Yes they have all kind of great resources around growth, profit, operations - and it's members are constantly exchanging best practices to level up.

But helping members achieve time freedom is their core mission.

I've watched Crane members go from sustained grinding to being able to take weeks off at a time. No one is saying it's easy - but it is possible if you make it a priority and spend time around people that share that same vision and purpose.

If you're dreaming of grinding the next decade to build an empire - don't apply.

If you’re looking to build a stable biz that requires you to work 10-20 hours while still moving the business forward - joining Crane could change your life.

But there’s only 24 hours left to apply to join.

Yours in the pursuit of freedom,

- JAAM

P.S. - Crane’s member benefits are unrivaled and keep getting better over time.

P.S.S. - The average company that applies to crane managers 677 doors and has been in business for 11.2 years.

P.S.S.S. - Crane members are extremely engaged - the members only forum is regularly on fire and is a place I personally follow and contribute.

P.S.S.S.S. - Wolf and Peter are just getting started. Mark my words that Crane is going to become a significant force in the SFR industry over the next few years.

This was a wild ride. Imagine growing to over 20,000 doors and then staring liquidation in the face. RW was sold to GA Technologies earlier this year for $8M after going public in 2022 via a SPAC that gave them the ticker symbol SFR. The rise, fall and rebirth of Renters Warehouse is a truly wild ride and I cannot thank Kevin Ortner enough for the courage and candor of breaking it all down. This interview is special for me for a couple reasons: Brenton Hayden, the founder of RW was the first...

The PAS (Property Accounting Software) market is at an inflection point. A small number of companies control the majority of the market. This control is used to exert leverage. Examples: Restricting customers from accessing their own data via API Charging customers exorbitant fees to access their own data via API Blocking vendors from integrating with their customers Taxing other vendors for the privilege of integrating with them What is the net effect of all of this? Customers have fewer...
