Ten lessons from ten years

Note: In 1 hour we go live from NYC w/ 630 ppl to launch "Autopilot" 👀🤯🚀🌕

10 years at LeadSimple...

Here's what I've learned along the way:

  1. Always go long. If it's not worth going long on don't do it. If you go long you will outlive your fears, critics and excuses. When in doubt, go long.
  2. Out care your competitors. Just care more. To the point of extreme inconvenience to yourself. This works 100% of the time without exception.
  3. Location before augmentation. We're wired to make changes to improve things. This is assumes you actually know what's going on. But if you really knew what was going on you probably wouldn't have this problem in the first place. Invest in clarifying the baseline before trying to fix things.
  4. Talent is everything. One person can change the trajectory of your company. One true believer, one other person that needs to win. I am hear to tell you that you cannot over invest in recruiting and retaining top talent.
  5. Productivity is a trap. Most of what your doing doesn't really matter. It's just a treadmill of tasks... that earn more tasks. Stop. Pause. Reflect. FOCUS.
  6. Blame yourself. Not because it's true, but because it's useful.
  7. Have the hard conversation at once. What you avoid follows you. If you have the courage to run towards conflict with an open heart and mind... it will get easier over time and everything in your life will improve. I promise.
  8. Sales is diagnosis. You don't need to be a doctor to suggest a cure, you do need an MD to diagnose the real ailment. The money is in diagnosis.
  9. Entrepreneurship is not a good way to make money. On a risk adjusted basis it makes no financial sense. The only reason to do it is for the love of the game. No love, no game, no money. You have to believe.
  10. Bet on yourself. No on is going to respect you more than you resect yourself. If you're not willing to bet on you - why would anyone else?

This was a wild ride. Imagine growing to over 20,000 doors and then staring liquidation in the face. RW was sold to GA Technologies earlier this year for $8M after going public in 2022 via a SPAC that gave them the ticker symbol SFR. The rise, fall and rebirth of Renters Warehouse is a truly wild ride and I cannot thank Kevin Ortner enough for the courage and candor of breaking it all down. This interview is special for me for a couple reasons: Brenton Hayden, the founder of RW was the first...

The PAS (Property Accounting Software) market is at an inflection point. A small number of companies control the majority of the market. This control is used to exert leverage. Customers have fewer...
